What Does a Girl Really Need in Her Activewear Wardrobe? A Guide for Ages 8–14
There’s a funny stage somewhere between childhood and the teenage years where getting dressed for sport suddenly becomes a little more complicated.
The leggings she happily wore a year ago might not feel quite right anymore. She might be asking for her first sports bra. She wants clothes that feel comfortable when she’s running, stretching or cartwheeling — but she also wants to actually like how they look.
And if you’re the one shopping for her, you’ve probably noticed another problem.
There’s plenty of activewear for little girls. There’s loads for women. But that bit in the middle? Girls aged around 8–14 who are growing, changing and beginning to develop their own style?
T
he choice suddenly feels much smaller.
It’s a huge reason why hy. was created - girls activewear designed with her in mind.
So, what does she actually need?

1. A sports bra that makes movement feel comfortable
For many girls, their first sports bra isn't really about “support” in the way we think about adult sports bras.
It's about comfort and confidence.
As her body begins to change, running, jumping and taking part in sport can suddenly feel different. A soft, comfortable sports bra can help her feel more secure without making this completely normal stage of growing up into a big deal.
Look for breathable fabric, a supportive underband, comfortable straps and enough stretch to move with her.
Our hy. Performance Puberty Bra was designed specifically with this stage in mind, with medium support, a racerback design and no enhanced padding.
2. Leggings she can actually MOVE in
This one was a biggie for us.
Girls shouldn't have to spend a gymnastics class pulling up their leggings. They shouldn't have to wonder whether their leggings are going see-through when they squat. And they definitely don't need uncomfortable seams getting in the way.
Our girls leggings have:
A comfortable high waistband
Four-way stretch material
Thick, quality fabric that provides good coverage
No front seam
Enough flexibility for running, dancing, gymnastics, training or just hanging out
Lovely trending autumal tones
Our hy. High-Waisted Leggings were designed around exactly that.
Think of the leggings Mum loves wearing by the big big brands — she gets the exact same material, but made for her.
3. Shorts that give her the same confidence
When she's training indoors, heading to gymnastics or dance, or we finally get one of those rare British hot days, a good pair of active shorts is invaluable.
Again, comfort matters.
Our approach to shorts is the same as our leggings: high-waisted, stretchy, comfortable and no front seam.
She should be thinking about the activity she's doing — not adjusting what she's wearing every five minutes.
4. An oversized tee she'll wear everywhere
Not every piece of activewear needs to be highly technical.
Sometimes she just needs a really good T-shirt.
An oversized tee can be thrown over a sports bra before class, worn with leggings after training or paired with joggers at the weekend.
And this is where activewear starts becoming more than “sports kit”.
Girls at this age are beginning to develop their own sense of style. They want pieces they can mix together and — importantly — they actually want to wear.
That's why our hy. tees have a relaxed oversized fit and simple embroidered branding. Sporty enough for active days, cool enough for everything else.
5. The throw-it-on hoodie
Every active girl needs one. Sorry, but she does. We ALL need a hoodie!
The hoodie she grabs on the way to class.
The one she throws on afterwards.
The one she wears with leggings on Saturday morning.
The one that somehow ends up coming on every car journey.
For autumn and winter especially, a thick oversized hoodie is one of the easiest pieces to get plenty of wear from.
Our hy. Signature Oversized Girls Hoodie is designed to have that proper oversized look girls love, with heavyweight fabric and our chenille hy. logo.
Warm, comfortable and very likely to mysteriously disappear into Mum's wardrobe.
6. A comfy set for the days in between
Being active doesn't always mean being in a sports class.
There are journeys to training. Weekends. Sleepovers. Trips out. Rest days. And those days when she just wants to be ridiculously comfortable.
A matching hoodie and jogger set bridges that gap beautifully.
Our hy. Girls Signature Jogger Set pairs an oversized hoodie with relaxed flared joggers, creating something she can throw on before class, travel in or simply lounge around in.
She doesn't need a wardrobe full of clothes
This is important to us.
We don't want to create huge quantities of clothing just for the sake of having endless new collections.
Girls don't need 20 pairs of leggings.
They need a few really good pieces that fit properly, feel comfortable, work together and get worn again and again.
That's why we're deliberately building hy. slowly.
Our range is small right now, but it's got the essentials — and we're okay with that.
As we grow, we want to introduce more pieces designed around different sports and activities, while continuing to listen to the girls actually wearing them.
We'd rather thoughtfully create something girls genuinely need than produce mountains of clothing that eventually end up unworn or in landfill.
Happy shopping,
Love hy. x
