Does my Daughter need a Sports Bra?

If you've recently found yourself wondering, “Does my daughter need a sports bra?”, you're certainly not alone.

There isn't a magic age when a girl suddenly needs one. Every child develops differently, and for many parents, the first sign isn't necessarily a conversation about bras at all.

You might simply notice that your daughter has started crossing her arms over her chest. She might pull at her T-shirt during PE, avoid running or jumping when she previously wouldn't have thought twice about it, or mention that movement feels uncomfortable.

Sometimes, she might not say anything at all.

When should girls start wearing a sports bra?

Rather than focusing on age, look at comfort and development.

As breast tissue begins to develop, activities involving running, jumping and repeated movement can start to feel different. A girl who was completely comfortable racing around a year ago may suddenly become very aware of movement beneath her clothes.

That's completely normal.

A soft, comfortable sports bra or supportive sports vest can be introduced whenever your daughter feels she would benefit from one. She doesn't need to reach a particular cup size or stage of puberty first.

The important thing is that it feels like something that makes movement more comfortable, rather than something she suddenly needs to hide.

Signs your daughter might be ready for a sports bra

Your daughter may benefit from some additional support if she:

  • feels uncomfortable when running or jumping

  • has started developing breast tissue

  • holds her chest while exercising

  • regularly adjusts or pulls at her clothing

  • feels self-conscious during PE or sport

  • wants additional coverage underneath T-shirts

  • simply asks for a sports bra herself

And sometimes the reason is simply: she feels more confident wearing one.

That's reason enough.

What should a first sports bra feel like?

For younger girls, support doesn't need to mean uncomfortable straps, complicated fastenings or heavily structured bras.

Look for something soft, stretchy and breathable that sits comfortably against the body and allows her to move freely.

Fit is particularly important. Growing bodies aren't miniature adult bodies, which is one of the reasons we've been so passionate about designing specifically for girls.

A first sports bra should feel reassuringly supportive without feeling restrictive.

Why we created the hy. Girls Performance Sports Bra/Vest

This exact stage of growing up was one of the inspirations behind hy.

We wanted to create something that didn't feel like a traditional bra.

Our hy. Girls Performance Sports Bra has been designed for growing girls who want comfortable support and coverage while they're active.

It can be worn underneath a school PE T-shirt for discreet support or worn as part of an activewear set with leggings or shorts. We have this girls sports bra in black, cocoa and caramel.

That versatility matters.

For the girl who's just beginning to develop, it can simply be something comfortable underneath her clothes.

For the girl who's further along and loves her activewear, it can be a piece she's confident wearing as part of her outfit.

Same product. Different girls. Different stages.

Keep the conversation simple

Puberty can already feel strange enough without making buying a first sports bra into a huge event.

Try involving your daughter in the decision.

Ask her what feels comfortable. Let her choose colours and styles she likes. Talk about support in the same ordinary way you would discuss needing new trainers for running or a swimming costume for swimming.

Most importantly, listen to her.

Some girls will want support relatively early. Others won't feel they need it until later.

Because developing shouldn't mean stopping

This is the part that matters most to us.

We don't want girls to stop running because running suddenly feels uncomfortable.

We don't want them standing at the side during PE because they're conscious of their changing bodies.

We don't want something as completely normal as growing up to become a reason they stop doing the activities they once loved.

If the right activewear can remove even one of those little barriers, then we've achieved something important.

So, does your daughter need a sports bra?

If she's developing and would feel more comfortable or confident with some extra support, it may be time to introduce one.

Let her lead the conversation, find something that feels good on her body and remind her that there's absolutely nothing unusual about needing a little more support as she grows.

Her body might be changing.

She should still feel completely free to move. ♡
